Armchair BEA - That Will Be All, Jeeves...

This week the Giant Book Expo America (BEA) conference is going on in NYC. For those of us who cannot attend, there is ArmchairBEA! Today's assignment - write up the BEST book you have read in 2012!

That's easy!

Are you familiar with P.G. Wodehouse? Some people call him the best writer of the last century!

You know the Jeeves character from 'Ask Jeeves'? That is his character!

Wodehouse wrote a LOT of books. I am pretty sure that quite a few, if not all, of them are out of print. But, they are worth - VERY worth - scouting out in the library. Wodehouse had such a command of the English language. Here are some quotes from some of his stories:

I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled.

“Unseen in the background, Fate was quietly slipping lead into the boxing-glove.”

“It is no use telling me there are bad aunts and good aunts. At the core, they are all alike. Sooner or later, out pops the cloven hoof. ”

These are hysterically funny stories about the British aristocracy, and I cannot recommend them enough!

  1. I've heard of Wodehouse, but not read anything. Since i'm so fascinated with Downton Abbey, maybe I should give his books a whirl. ..My “Best Of” Post

  2. I definitely have a "Best Of Wodehouse" book sitting on my shelf at home. I picked it up at my local bookstore a few months ago, and you just moved it up my TBR pile for me. Thanks!

  3. I hadn't heard of these but I love anything British (even if it's humor/satire). I know I will be checking these out.

  4. That last quote is so funny! Who knew I had a cloven hoof? ;) I haven't read any of those books, but have been tempted by them in the past.

  9. I love Jeeves! I've listened to a couple of books on audio. They were so entertaining, I was laughing out loud. Good thing I was alone.

  12. Wodehouse sounds right up my alley, and I can't believe I haven't read anything by him yet. I did just read an interesting article about Wodehouse and his fanatics. Apparently there is a Wodehouse Society with regional chapters and get-togethers and even a convention! I need to get in on that!

  14. I adore Jeeves and Wooster!!! I have quite a strange variety of Wodehouse's titles. The man was a writing machine. Good news: I saw all the Jeeves books in London at an off-price bookstore - 4 shelves of them, seriously. If I could have boxed up one of each and taken them home, believe me I would. I didn't buy any at all, but that's because I've already got plenty I need to get to at home.

Also, I'm totally convinced I saw Stephen Fry standing in line for tea at the Wolseley. My husband didn't see him and therefore is convinced I just saw some other VERY TALL man who looked a lot like Stephen Fry. I guess we'll never know. :)

  15. Hi, thanks for stopping by my blog today:). I haven't read any of these Jeeves books, I may have to check them out. BTW, loved your intro post. My BIL is a city planner with the counties around Atlanta, he loves his job.
    Have a great week.

  16. I haven't read all of the Jeeves and Wooster books, but I like the ones I've read. A few of them are in the public domain, not the ones that are out of print and hard to find, though. At some point, I must watch the TV show. Love Fry and Laurie, but I wanted to read at least some of the books first.
