Wondrous Words Wednesday - "The Lantern"

I just finished reading "The Lantern" by Deborah Lawrenson. GREAT book, by the way. It is set in a to-die-for hamlet in Provence. A full review is coming, but for now, the words.

This post has been prepared so as to participate in Wondrous Words Wednesday a fun meme over at BermudaOnion.net where we discuss new-to-us words that we have encountered in our reading that week.

Here are words that I looked up (on Dictionary.com) from the book, "The Lantern":

SUSURRATION - susurration \soo-suh-RAY-shun\ , noun: A whispering sound; a soft murmur. . . .the soft susurration of the wind through a stand of whistling thorn.

ALEMBIC - a·lem·bic   [uh-lem-bik] noun 1.a vessel with a beaked cap or head, formerly used in distilling. (Note: This makes sense because they are harvesting lavender and making an essence with it.)

  1. Two great words there. I know I've seen both of them before, but I'd forgotten them both. Thanks for reminding me.

  3. I think I learned susurration from one of the Harry Potter books. I've been able to remember it because it reminds me of a snake.

  4. Hi Libby,

I have never come across 'alembic' before, however 'sussuration' I have come across before in my reading. It is such a descriptive word, invoking both the sound and feeling of a whispering wind. It also seems such a calming and sensual word.

    Thanks for sharing,

    Yvonne
